Galatasaray ISTANBUL take control of the tie with 3-0 home win

Istanbul, Turkey, February 7, 2017. In the first match of the 1/8 Finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup, Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR from Slovenia travelled to Istanbul to take on Galatasaray.  In a match that lasted just over an hour, the home team came away with an important 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-19, 25-15) and now have the edge going into their away match scheduled in a couple of weeks.

In the first set, Galatasaray gained the advantage with a number of attacks through their Italian opposite Nadia Centoni, and their outside hitter from Belgium, Charlotte Leys.  Starting the brighter, they soon found themselves 8-4 ahead at the first technical time-out.  The visiting team from Maribor did not give up and some strong attacks from positions 2 and 4 forced the Galatasaray blockers to make mistakes.  Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR were ahead by one point at the second technical time-out, however the hosts managed to turn the tide thanks to some well-placed attacks from Seda Aslanyürek and they ended up winning the first set 25-23.

Galatasaray grabbed full control of the game at the beginning of the second set, entering the technical time-outs 8-4 and 16-10.  However, after this Galatasaray faced a few problems, which enabled MARIBOR to close the gap. Yet the effort of the visiting team was not enough and Galatasaray excelled in blocking and came out victorious of the second set as well (25-19).

Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR could not maintain the pace in the third set and Galatasaray comfortably reached the end of the set (25-15) and the match (3-0).



After the match Charlotte Leys commented: “The first set was a close call, our opponent used our blocks very well and made us make mistakes. As of the second set we were on top of the game, serving hard and receiving well, we gained the victory. We now have a great advantage to pass the round. Congratulations to all my teammates.”
