LPR Volley PIACENZA outplay NOVI SAD to set sights on CEV Cup quarterfinals
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Piacenza, Italy, February 1, 2017. On Wednesday night, LPR Volley PIACENZA cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-16, 27-25) over Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD of Serbia to set their sights on a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men with the re-match set to take place in two weeks’ time.
PIACENZA needed only 76 minutes to claim the first round of their tie with NOVI SAD. With Serbia’s national team head coach Nikola Grbic in attendance, the coach of PIACENZA, Alberto Giuliani decided to rest some of his starting players, Leonel Marshall and Fernando Hernandez. Georgios Tzioumakas played as opposite hitter for the Italians with Viktor Yosifov being one of LPR Volley’s two middle blockers – and these two players chiefly contributed to compelling 25-20 and 25-16 wins in the first and second sets - where NOVI SAD success rate in attack and reception stood at 17% and 22% only. The third set was a lot closer with Miran Kujundzic and David Mehic stepping up for Vojvodina but Tzioumakas eventually scored the last point of the match (27-25) to make it a 3-0 victory for the Italians.
Middle blockers Yosifov and Aimone Alletti scored six times apiece for PIACENZA and their performance was one of the deciding factors as they scored many important points at blocking and in attack as well. However, Tzioumakas was the ‘man of the match’ for LPR Volley as he finished on 15 points, including one ace and one block – with Simone Parodi and Trévor Clevenot adding 14 each to the tally of PIACENZA. Clevenot’s performance from the service line was outstanding and with three aces in a row, he practically determined the fate of the second set. PIACENZA outplayed NOVI SAD in all aspects of the game: six aces vs. four for the Serbians, 52% and 50% success rate in reception and attack respectively (vs. 34% and 39%), and nine blocks vs. seven.
As for Vojvodina, only Kujundzic and Mehic finished the match in double digits – 12 and 10 – with Petar Premovic adding another eight points to the count of NOVI SAD.
