PIACENZA to take on Serbian opponent after missing out on sensation in national cup semis
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Piacenza, Italy, January 30, 2017. LPR Volley PIACENZA will be hosting on Wednesday, February 1, at Palabanca Serbia’s Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD in the first round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men 8th Finals.
PIACENZA just lost a dramatic semi-final match to eventual National Cup winners Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA – a match that this past Saturday lasted for five sets and set the tone for a much anticipated weekend by Italy’s Volleyball family. The match became a duel between the respective opposite hitters, with Fernando Hernandez scoring as many as 31 points for PIACENZA to keep the pace of the Bulgarian star of Cucine Lube, Tsvetan Sokolov (32). PIACENZA eventually lost 13-15 in the tie-break before CIVITANOVA went on to seize the crown by beating TRENTINO Diatec 3-1 in the ‘grand finale’.
As for Vojvodina, they are the current leaders of the Serbian national league. PIACENZA are now entirely focussed on the first matchup with the Serbian team, knowing that they are a hard nut to crack. “Vojvodina have a young, and yet talented team, with some promising players,” said LPR Volley PIACENZA assistant coach Marco Camperi. “They have always grown and developed good players such as Drazen Luburic and on top of this they can count on the tradition of the Serbian Volleyball school, which we know is outstanding especially when it comes to the development of technical skills. In the previous round of the CEV Cup they beat C.S. Arcada GALATI, a very good team both from a physical and technical standpoint, so this means that we have to take this opponent very seriously.”
