Galatasaray through to next round of Challenge Cup after dominant display
2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Men
Istanbul, Turkey, December 8, 2016. Galatasaray HDI ISTANBUL easily claimed the remake of their matchup with Pafiakos PAFOS of Cyprus cruising to a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-12, 25-11) at Burhan Felek Volleyball Hall in Istanbul to make it through the 16th Finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men.
Pafiakos had taken one set from Galatasaray only two days ago by using the weak side of the Turks very wisely, so this time around the hosts started the match much focussed and fully motivated to progress to the next round. Galatasaray did a great job especially at serving and their attack was well organised too. There were no ups and downs in their performance and this resulted in a compelling 3-0 victory for the Turks.
Milan Grsic, head coach of Pafiakos PAFOS, said: “It was a great experience for us to participate in this competition. Congratulations to Galatasaray. Our performance tonight was not good at all. Our first setter was not with us and this put us in a difficult position when it comes to the organisation of our game. Seeing this from a different perspective, this provided us at the same time with an opportunity to play with our younger players and prepare them for the next fixtures in our national league.”
Galatasaray head coach Nedim Özbey said: “I would like to congratulate my players on this victory. They showed a lot of determination and our strength right now comes also from young players who have been grown in the junior and youth divisions of the club. We have seen how enthusiastically and disciplined they played in the third set. As a coach and fan of Galatasaray at the same time, this is what I am mostly proud of.”
