2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men
Rzeszow, Poland, December 6, 2016. The players and coaching staff of Poland’s Asseco Resovia RZESZOW were among the guests of a press conference organised at the local Town Hall in Rzeszow and specifically devoted to the team’s participation in the 2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Men. The event was also attended by the Vice-President of the City of Rzeszow, Stanislaw Sienko, and by the Chairman of the club, Bartosz Gorski. Head coach Andrzej Kowal, team captain Jochen Schöps and outside spiker Gavin Schmitt, the new star player of the Polish club, were also in attendance.
“We are very much looking forward to a successful campaign of our team in the CEV Volleyball Champions League. I want to congratulate our team on their past achievements and wish them good luck for the coming season,” Mr Sienko said.
“Traditionally, here we start our journey in European competitions. We are ready to achieve the goal we have been dreaming about for many years. We want to win the Champions League. The way to get there is very difficult, our group is certainly stronger than last season. Across Europe, we want to promote our brand, city, state and sponsors. As in last year’s Champions League, our Volleyball players will play in t-shirts depicting the main features of our region,” Bartosz Gorski said.
“We have set really high goals, and we want to make it to the final stages of this competition. However, I believe in small steps, and so the most important thing for us is the next match and that will be our focus for the time being,” said head coach Andrzej Kowal.

“We are looking forward to the start of the Champions League. It will be an interesting group. We have to take it game after game, step by step. It is the Champions League, a very special competition, where everything is possible. We want to show our best,” said Jochen Schöps, who is the new captain of the team this season after Aleh Akhrem moved to Turkey to play for Halkbank ANKARA.
“It may be surprising but I never got the chance to play in the Champions League yet because when I played in Arkas IZMIR I was injured and I could not play any European game. So I am really excited now to play in Rzeszow and to take part in the Champions League. Our fans are kind of crazy. We have a good team. Our group is not easy but we have a good possibility to achieve something great,” said Gavin Schmitt. The Canadian-born opposite is really the new star of Resovia – he crowned his comeback to competitive Volleyball by receiving the award for the Most Valuable Player for three matches in a row in the Polish national league.
Asseco Resovia RZESZOW was drawn in Pool B together with Dukla LIBEREC, BERLIN Recycling Volleys and Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA. Resovia will start their campaign on December 8 with an away match against reigning Czech national champions Dukla LIBEREC.
