Historic CL premiere highlights women’s leading role in growing Volleyball in Montenegro
2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women
Bar, Montenegro, October 24, 2016. Last Saturday, October 22 was a historic day for Montenegro’s Volleyball family since Topolica hall in Bar hosted the first ever women’s CEV Volleyball Champions League match contested on Montenegrin soil. Though hosts Luka BAR ended up losing 2-3 the re-match with Estonia’s KOHILA VC, still it was a moment to remember for the local club – and also for a number of women that were heavily involved in the organisation and delivery of this premiere.
With the only exception being first referee Konstantin Yovchev from Bulgaria, all match officials were indeed females, starting with second referee Ksenjia Jurkovic from Croatia to continue with fine line judges – Jelena Mitrovic, Milica Mandic, Gordana Posuka, Sanja Vujicic and Ivana Scepanovic. All five have played Volleyball themselves, and are now very much involved in the activities of the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro (OSCG) as line judges and referees who have shared their total passion for Volleyball by officiating at many matches contested in this small Mediterranean country.
That is not all, for reserve referee Sonja Simonovska and CEV Supervisor Jelena Reljin of Serbia added another two members to the female contingent involved in the historic match.
Last but not least comes Organising Director Lidija Spicanovic, a former Volleyball player as well, now a member of the club’s Managing Board, who works as the Chief Financial Officer for Luka Bar, i.e. the company that owns and manages Montenegro’s strongest women’s Volleyball club.
The above picture speaks for itself showing the key role that women play in the development and growth of Volleyball in Montenegro and there is certainly more to come after the historic premiere of Europe’s elite competition…
