Hungarian national champions join Car Free Day in Békéscsaba
News from the clubs

Békéscsaba, Hungary, September 28, 2016. Three-time Hungarian national champions Linamar-BÉKÉSCSABAI RSE – who will soon make their debut in Europe’s premier club competition, the CEV Volleyball Champions League – are committed to supporting initiatives focussing on sustainable development, environmental protection and attitude-shaping youth and sports events.

In conjunction with the European Mobility Week, the club recently joined a Car Free Day initiative, which raised environmental consciousness, while drawing everyone’s attention to the importance of biking and walking and with it, of a healthy lifestyle as well. It is important to stress that the players of Linamar-BÉKÉSCSABAI RSE did not use their bikes on this special day only, but they actually ride their bikes in their everyday lives as well.

The club started with this campaign last season when supporters could purchase for team members and for the coaching staff unique bikes featuring the names of the players. This initiative was a huge success, since in a short period of time several businessmen and sponsors came forward and supported this cause, as they realised the potential of this idea – and the whole story enjoyed much exposure on the media.

“More than the average number of people use their bikes in Békéscsaba, i.e. 31 percent of the inhabitants use their bikes regularly, and I believe that the cycling infrastructure in our city is very good. It is under continuous development with the help of the City Council. I am proud that our Volleyball team joined such an initiative and they did so with so much enthusiasm,” said the Mayor of Békéscsaba, Péter Szarvas.

On the Car Free Day two of the club’s members, Réka Ludmán and Brigitta Petrenkó along with chairman Ádám Baran started their bike ride at 7 o’clock in the morning, and cycled to the main square of Békéscsaba where they participated in the event organised by the local authorities and many other civil organisations.

Linamar-BÉKÉSCSABAI RSE is committed to supporting sustainable development and a healthy lifestyle, thus they happily take part in such events. It is well-known that the players of the team use their bikes daily, so their words are genuine when talking about this topic and they can also act as an example and role model for other citizens to look up to.

“The purpose of the Car Free Day is to raise the population’s awareness that it is not necessary to go everywhere by car, and the club will always join such an attitude-shaping activity,” said Ádám Baran, the chairman of the club.
