Czech Republic coach Waibl resigns with immediate effect
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women
Prague, Czech Republic, September 27, 2016. After failing to qualify to the 2017 EuroVolley Finals this past weekend – the Czech Republic finished second in their pool and will now have a last shot at that feat in home and away matches with their neighbours from Slovakia – German-born coach Alexander Waibl announced his resignation with immediate effect.
“After analysing the current circumstances, I feel like the team needs an extra push and for this reason I believe that my resignation at this moment will help the Czech national team make it through the playoff matches with Slovakia,” Waibl said.
The Czech national team will play the upcoming matches under the guidance of Waibl’s assistant, Zdenek Pommer. “Our only goal is to qualify to the Final Round of the European Championship by winning the upcoming matches with Slovakia,” Pommer said. As far as the roster of the team is concerned, no changes will be made to the group that played first at home in Brno and this past weekend in Maribor, Slovenia.
“The resignation of coach Waibl comes as a surprise to me and as a result we had to react swiftly,” said Jakub Novotny, who is responsible for national teams at the Czech Volleyball Federation. “This role is now taken over by Zdenek Pommer, thus making sure we will continue our work with the necessary consistency and the same style.”
The Czechs will host Slovakia this coming Saturday, October 1 in Jablonec nad Nisou before the re-match follows on October 5 in Poprad, Slovakia.
