Atomic Girls settle for silver to celebrate record sixth straight national league medal
News from the clubs

Sopot, Poland, May 6, 2016. Poland’s PGE Atom Trefl SOPOT recently finished the domestic season with their sixth consecutive national league medal. This time the Atomic Girls had to settle for the silver after losing three straight matches in the championship series with Chemik POLICE.

Only a few minutes after the very last point of the third match with POLICE, Lorenzo Micelli, PGE Atom Trefl head coach, immediately stored this medal away. That’s because despite being definitely proud of his team and what they have accomplished, he is known as somebody who just does not like – he actually hates – losing.

“I am not happy with the result. The main goal for me is to win, to be the best. That’s why my mood is not so good right now. Anyway, I have to say a huge thank you to the club. Honestly, considering our situation, conditions or budget, it is simply impossible to beat such a great and rich team like Chemik is. We were close, we were really close to achieving this, but the difference between our respective level and experience was just too evident. They beat us seven times in seven matches this year, so we can’t look for any excuses. They were just better than us. I can be proud of my team as we have been working really hard for the entire season and this applies to each and every one who has been working for the club and supporting us. If I look at this and at their commitment, I can say that we won gold. However, we should also take into consideration what we achieved on court. And from this standpoint we did not manage everything in the best way,” Micelli said.

However, it is still interesting and important to point out that some of the Atomic Girls were chosen to compose the ‘Dream Team’ identified by national media. One of these ‘dream girls’ is the Atomic libero, Agata Durajczyk.

“We got silver in the end, so undoubtedly I am still dreaming about the gold medal. I hope one day I will get it. This time in our league’s final we had nothing left to pose a real threat to Chemik. I think that our form and focus flew away after the tough semi-final matches we had against Impel WROCLAW. I am really sad that this was our last game this season, because we had an excellent team with an amazing spirit and now we are parting ways again. I want to stress once again, that we are really happy with the final result, because at the beginning of the season many had predicted we would have ended up with bronze only, with silver going straight to Impel. However, after we beat them in the semis, we proved that we are once more the second-best women’s team in Poland,” said Durajczyk.

It was the sixth consecutive season where PGE Atom Trefl SOPOT claimed a medal at the end of the national league. Since the national championship became fully professional about a decade ago, the only other team to have achieved a similar feat is Fakro Muszynianka MUSZYNA.
