VC WIESBADEN lose in three sets to C.S.M. BUCURESTI
2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women

Wiesbaden, Germany, February 9, 2016. The first leg of the quarter-final fixture in the 2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women between VC WIESBADEN and C.S.M. BUCURESTI ended in a commanding 3-0 win for the visitors from Romania (25-20, 25-22, 25-21).

1,600 spectators witnessed a balanced game at the beginning of the match before the team from Bucharest took an 8-4 lead going into the first technical time-out. It was especially the blocking performance of C.S.M. BUCURESTI that made the difference against the strong attacks of VC WIESBADEN, thanks to the technical work of Francois Salvagni, who just started his work as head coach of the Romanian team only a short seven days ago. VC WIESBADEN were unable to find an effective answer to outside spiker Jasna Majstorovic who cashed the first set ball for the visitors to make it 25-20 in their favour at the end of the opening set.

The second set became a true roller-coaster ride for the German team who played with many ups and downs. VC WIESBADEN showed determination and fought back after an early three-point deficit. Going into the last stage of set 2 the score was levelled at 20-20. Unfortunately for the home fans the German team couldn’t keep their heads cool and lost the second set to C.S.M. BUCURESTI 25-22.

The third set promised to end in a better way for VC WIESBADEN, as they reached the first technical time-out leading 8-3. This lead was further extended to 11-5. C.S.M. BUCURESTI head coach reacted to the temporary weakness of his otherwise cleverly playing team and Giulia Pincerato was replaced by back-up setter Diana Lorena Tataru. It took some time for the players to adapt to this change but in the end the Romanian team used their international experience and ended up winning also the third set at 25-21.

Francois Salvagni, head coach of C.S.M. BUCURESTI: “I can only say thank you to my players. I became this club’s head coach one week ago. Together with my amazing staff I changed only a few things and my team did everything I asked them to execute. So I think it is a really great result and a good start for our future collaboration.”

Dirk Gross, head coach of VC WIESBADEN: “Our opponent played well tonight. We knew they were a strong team heading into this match. We were unable to play at 100% of our capabilities and strengths, and tonight we were missing enough self-esteem. Another factor was probably the fact that we have been playing quite a lot of matches lately. It is important to focus on the national competitions and to win the important matches there as well.”
