Galatasaray recover from slow start to edge Swiss underdogs
2016 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Istanbul, Turkey, January 19, 2016. Switzerland’s underdogs Volley KÖNIZ did not stand a real chance in their first matchup with Galatasaray ISTANBUL in the quarter-finals of the 2016 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women. On Tuesday night the hosts got over their mistakes in reception at the beginning of the match and cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win (25-16, 25-17, 25-16).
Side-lined already before the start of the match with two players who had to stay at home because of injury, the visitors from Switzerland had to deal with another setback as their Czech attacker Martina Frankova suffered an ankle injury in the early stages of the first set. Still they managed to lead the way at the first technical time-out (8-4) by mean of their effective serves.
Galatasaray recovered fast from their mistakes in reception and brought the set to a tie (8-8). Despite the visiting team’s efforts to force their opponent to make more mistakes, the hosts used a number of different attack combinations and combined this with a solid defence, which in the end resulted in a compelling 3-0 win.
After the match, Galatasaray head coach Ataman Güneyligil said: “Our opponent used a pretty effective serving strategy as you could see at the beginning of the match. What we did to come back was to stick to our game plan and not to lose confidence because of the mistakes we made earlier in the set. I congratulate my players, all of them, and especially the young members of the team coming from the bench who were up to the task they were given in the third set. Next week the return match will be more difficult. Our opponent will have the home advantage, and most probably their injured players will come back in time. We must continue to play with the same discipline we showed today.”
