Dinamo MOSCOW cruise to three-set win over Turkish rookies
2016 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Moscow, Russia, December 17, 2015. Russia’s Dinamo MOSCOW claimed their second win in Pool B of the 2016 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men and did so in style as they routed Turkey’s rookies Ziraat Bankasi ANKARA in three sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-22) to top the charts in the pool with seven points. Dinamo MOSCOW had previously beaten VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN in early November before losing last week at the tie-break to France’s PARIS Volley.
Dinamo MOSCOW caught a very solid start of their home match leading by 8:4 at the first technical time-out of the opening set, before Ziraat Bankasi ANKARA flipped the charts around at the second (15:16) with the help of their star spikers Marcus Nilsson and Alexandre Ferreira. However, Dinamo performed a lot better than their opponent towards the end of the period and good serving by Igor Filippov paved the way to the final 25-21 in favour of the hosts.
The second set was a close battle as well and Ziraat Bankasi edged ahead at 13:15 on an ace by Ferreira. However, Dinamo responded well with a series of five straight points and this break was enough to secure the final 25-22 set win as middle blocker Dmitry Shcherbinin and setter Sergey Grankin stood out for the home side at this stage.
The story repeated itself in the third set where the visitors from Turkey relied mostly on their outside spikers, whereas Dinamo played with a variety of solutions in attack. Pavel Kruglov and Yury Berezhko set the pace for the Russian side and Dinamo claimed a three-point lead at the second technical time-out. Pavel Pankov replaced Sergey Grankin at this point whereas Ziraat Bankasi decided to use Selim Demir. Dinamo continued to control the operations and brought the match to an end with a spike by Alexander Markin (25-22). Pavel Kruglov top scored in the end with 17 points.
Dinamo’s coach Oleg Antonov said after the match: “Of course I am happy with a 3:0 win. It was an interesting match and we had some problems in the opening set where I was concerned that the period would go our opponent’s way. We made some stupid mistakes, like for instance we did not spike at all, missing the right timing. In the second and third sets we played a lot better and with more confidence, so I could relax a bit as I was pretty sure we would have won the match in the end. We still have to win two more matches in order to qualify for the Playoffs and we are especially hoping to get our revenge from PARIS Volley in January once they come to Russia.”
