Easy ride for PERUGIA on the way to CEV Cup quarterfinals
2016 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men
Perugia, Italy, December 16, 2015. The re-match between Italy’s Sir Safety-Sicoma PERUGIA and Mirad PU PRESOV ended as the first clash played two weeks ago in Slovakia. The Italians were on a class of their own and with yet another 3:0 win (25-12, 25-16, 25-16) they claimed a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2016 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men.
The match was really one-sided and the difference in quality was evident. However, it was a good test for PERUGIA after they recently parted ways with coach Daniel Castellani, welcoming back Slobodan Kovac at the helm of the team.
The first set ended at 25-12, a massive score which testifies that PERUGIA was in front from start to end. The early stages of the second set provided for a closer battle but PERUGIA broke away halfway through, slowly but surely widening their lead to finish the second period with an easy 25-16 win. The third set followed the same plot (25-16) and the Italians could celebrate their promotion to the quarterfinals of Europe’s second most prestigious club competition where they will be playing Germany’s SWD powervolleys DÜREN in late January.
Samuel Connor Holt, outside spiker of Sir Safety-Sicoma PERUGIA, commented: “It was a good game for us. I am happy with my performance and felt very confident during this game. Kovac is a good coach for me and I hope we can achieve good results together.”
Jozef Pelescak, opposite of Mirad MU PRESOV, said: “It was very difficult to play against a world-class team as PERUGIA. We knew there is a huge difference between us but we tried to play our best. In the end it was not enough but we enjoyed the atmosphere and everything was perfect here.”
