Golden set win for VDK GENT Dames to make CEV Cup Round of 16
2016 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Sneek, Netherlands, November 11, 2015. After their 3:1 away victory from two weeks ago, the Dutch champions of VC SNEEK were the favourites to reach the second round of the CEV Volleyball Cup but the return match at home did not go the way they hoped. In a fully packed sports centre filled with almost 1,000 spectators, VC SNEEK never reached the level they had showed in Gent and ended up losing in three sets to VDK GENT Dames (13-25, 14-25, 22-25) and after that lost also the golden set that followed (10-15).
In the first set VDK GENT served strong and succeeded in disturbing the game plan of VC SNEEK. The Dutchwomen were not able to pass correctly and therefore their attacking actions were quite slow. Only in the end of the first set VC SNEEK started to play better but still lost it by a landslide 13-25.
The second set started as disastrously as the first one for the home side. After only two minutes the score stood at 1:6. Petra Groenland, the coach of VC SNEEK, changed setter Nynke Oud for Simone Linstra which helped set up a more coordinated attack and VC SNEEK came back to 11:12. VDK GENT Dames continued to put pressure on their opponents and after leading 15:11 and 21:12, and despite another couple of time-outs by Petra Groenland, the Belgians finished the set at 25-15 in their favour.
Groenland was obliged to find some solution and started the third set with Denise Baas, Anniek Siebring and Klaske Sikkes. Sikkes served VC SNEEK to 5:1 and ultimately to 9:4. The atmosphere at the local sports centre got more and more tense point after point. After a substitution which took quite some time, VDK GENT Dames came back from 10:6 to 12:10. The spikers from the Belgian team found back their best play and eventually levelled the score at 13 all. VC SNEEK went into the technical time-out leading 16:14 but after a long rally GENT made it 17 all and went on to lead 22:19, before finishing the set at 25-22.
As VC SNEEK had recorded a 3:1 away win in Belgium, the eventual winner of this tie was to be decided at the golden set. VDK GENT Dames opened proceedings with a 4:1 run and had a margin of two points as teams switched sides of the court (8:6). As they trailed 8:11, VC SNEEK asked for another time-out but could not compensate for their deficit anymore. GENT claimed the golden set by 15-10 and this way secured their spot in the next round of the CEV Volleyball Cup whilst VC SNEEK will continue their European journey in the Challenge Cup playing there Russia’s Zarechie ODINTSOVO.
