Topvolley Callant ANTWERP overcome shaky start to seal home win
2016 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Antwerp, Belgium, November 4, 2015. After a difficult start Belgium’s Topvolley Callant ANTWERP steamed through to a convincing win against Greece’s Foinikas SYROS (3-1: 26-28, 25-15, 25-18, 25-15) in the first round of play of the 2016 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men.
Foinikas SYROS caught the best start with their unstoppable opposite Tomislav Dokic. The home team made too many errors but came back to level the score at 14:14. In a nervous final section of the period it was Dokic who again helped the visitors from Greece edge ahead.
The players of Topvolley Callant ANTWERP did not lose composure and started playing better as the actions resumed. Jolan Cox scored time and again, while Mateusz Przybyla served strong and Georg Klein blocked a few balls to the delight of the home crowd (about 1,000 spectators attended this game), and their combined efforts resulted in a speedy 25-15 win for the home team.
The third period started a bit scrummy (11:11) but three aces in a row from man of the match Jolan Cox secured this set for ANTWERP as well. An early lead for Adrien Prével and his mates in set four gave the home team the opportunity to play quite relaxed and the hosts finished it off in great fashion with a 25-15 set win.
This is an important win for coach Alain Dardenne and his team who can now travel to Greece in two weeks time knowing they ‘only’ have to win another two sets to secure their qualification for the next round.
