VC SNEEK upset Belgian cup winners VDK GENT Dames in CEV Cup first round

Gent, Belgium, October 28, 2015. VDK GENT Dames lost their first match in the 2016 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women to a well-organised VC SNEEK of the Netherlands by 1:3. The home team mentored by Jan De Brandt made too many mistakes to hope for a victory and ended up losing in four sets to their neighbours from the Netherlands (15-25, 15-25, 25-19, 23-25).
VC SNEEK started the match with Fenna Zeinstra scoring twice for 5:2 and forcing a time-out by Jan De Brandt. VC SNEEK widened the gap but Laure Flament from the service line could bring VDK GENT Dames back to 8:10. VC SNEEK ran away to 16:8 at the second technical time-out trough mistakes of VDK GENT Dames. The difference remained through to the end and with their excellent performance at the net the Dutchwomen brought the first set to a happy end at 25-15.
Also in the second set the guests took a flying start with Roos van Wijnen standing behind the service line. Captain Fenna Zeinstra propelled her team for a 16:9 lead and once again many mistakes by VDK GENT Dames paved the way with gold for the Dutch visitors, and Zeinstra finished it off for a second time at 25-15.
VDK GENT Dames took for the first time the lead in the match at 4:2 in the third set. But good work from Roos van Wijnen and excellent serving turned the situation around (4:8). However, GENT Dames fought back and levelled at 10:10 with some good blocks. Hungarian international Agnes Pallag showed the way by scoring from the service line and made it 16:12 at the second technical time-out for the Belgian hosts. Christine Anthony could score three points but VC SNEEK came back to 19:17. GENT Dames eventually took the third set with a blocking point against Fenna Zeinstra.
Gwendoline Horemans scored four times for VDK GENT Dames in set four and at 7:3 the mentor of VC SNEEK Petra Groenland took a time out. Christine Anthony contributed to the provisional 10:6 on the scoreboard and some mistakes by the visitors moved the score to 16:11 for GENT at the second technical time-out. An ace of van Wijnen brought the guests back on track: 16:14. VC SNEEK took the lead at 21:19 with Marrit Jasper standing behind the service line before Carlijn Ghijssen-Jans scored the last point for a well deserved Dutch victory (25-23).
