Best blocking team eager to test themselves among Europe’s finest sides
2015 CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship - Men
Copenhagen, Denmark, March 31, 2015. Denmark was the best blocking team among all those who entered the qualification round for the 2015 CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship – Men held last January. The Danes are just about to make their first ever appearance in the Final Round of this competition and are eager to prove their value.
Of the 148 points Denmark scored in the qualification tournament they played in Sofia, Bulgaria, 35 of these were blocking points. Actually, the Danes scores 3.5 blocking points on average per set. That is more than any other team did on their way to the upcoming Final Round in Turkey, and better than big Volleyball nations such as Russia, Serbia and Poland did.
The great blocking game was part of the success that secured Denmark’s U19 men their debut at a European Championship Final Round in this age group.
“We are looking forward to a European Championship where we are going to face some incredibly strong nations. The expectations are high; we understand the challenge that lies ahead but we will not give up without a fight. We are part of the European Championship because we got the right to be there,” says Danish mentor Thomas Skifter Bertelsen.
“We have to play at the level that we showed in the qualification round. We have causes some real surprises there. Whether that is enough to give us a victory or two at the Championship is hard to tell, but we will try our best,” he says.
The captain of the Danish team, Oscar Møllgaard, is also eager to be a part of Europe’s 12 best teams in Turkey.
“I am really looking forward to playing against Poland, Italy, and Russia. I have never tested my skills against such great Volleyball nations before, and it is going to be a big experience to play against the rising stars of Europe,” he says.
Denmark can expect quite a tough time at the European Championship in Turkey, where the debutant Danes face flagship nations France, Italy, Poland, Russia and Serbia in Pool I.
