Wroclaw, Poland, January 28, 2015. It was the last night for the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women in Wroclaw. Impel WROCLAW lost to Volero ZURICH by 1:3 (22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-25) and finished its adventure in Europe’s most prestigious club competition without any wins, while the Swiss side ended up second in Pool D and is awaiting tomorrow’s drawing of lots for the playoffs in Luxembourg.
Volero started the first set well, but Impel did not give up. At the first technical time-out Impel was leading by 8-7, after successfully blocking Dobriana Rabadzhieva's attack from the left. Then the teams fought point for point, but only for a short moment. With four points in a row, Volero took a 15-11 lead. The head coach of Impel Tore Aleksandersen was forced to take a time-out at 15-19. It was really helpful. The home side managed to catch up at 21-21, but the ending was better for Volero, which won by 25-22.
The start of the second set was better for the hosts as Agnieszka Kakolewska was playing very well. Impel’s supporters at Orbita sports hall were watching a one-sided game and Impel was leading by 16-8 at the second technical time-out. They had very good serving and tight blocks. The team from Wroclaw also played very well in defence, especially the libero Agata Sawicka. Impel won by 25-19 after an offensive fault by Olesia Rykhliuk, who later finished as the top scorer of the match with 22 points.
The beginning of the third set was very good for Aleksandersen's team. His girls were leading by 8-5 at the first technical time-out, but after that it was not an easy game for them. Volero was determined and took a 14-12 lead. The Norwegian coach of Impel was forced to take a time-out, but it did not help. The Polish squad lost 8 points in row, but managed to compensate and even Impel took a 21-20 lead. However, some perfect serving from Courtney Thompson gave the victory to the Swiss by 25-22.
The fourth set it was a one-side spectacle. Volero was in the lead from the beginning through the end to hammer out an impressive 25-15 final score.
“I am satisfied with my team. We were really close to winning the third set as we were leading by 21-20. I am happy that some of my players could rest today before the important upcoming game in the Polish Orlen Liga. Kasia Mroczkowska is not so young,” said Tore Aleksandersen.
“I was not an easy game for us. Impel is a very good team. The Polish supporters are great!” commented Courtney Thompson, Volero's setter.
