Chemik POLICE claim dramatic tie-break victory to secure first place in star-studded Pool A
2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women
Baku, Azerbaijan, January 28, 2015. On Wednesday Poland’s rookies Chemik POLICE completed an already fabulous campaign in the League Round of the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women by cruising to their fourth victory in six matches and secure their leadership in Pool A on 13 points. POLICE edged past the hosts of Rabita BAKU – bronze medallists from last year’s edition – in five sets at the end of a dramatic match that lasted for more than two hours (27-25, 18-25, 25-16, 16-25, 15-10).
The first set was extremely close as both teams were battling with their nerves but in the end the visitors from Poland had the upper hand by cashing it in the extra time (27-25). Rabita then responded by setting the pace right from the start of the second set bringing it to an end with a comfortable 25-18. The third set started the right way for the home side but POLICE played extremely well, especially in defence, exploiting the mistakes made by the local girls to cruise to a speedy 25-16 set win. POLICE continued to dictate the tempo of the match also in the fourth set though by the slimmest possible margin (8:7 at the first technical time-out). However, Rabita responded by unleashing their full potential and eventually drew level in sets with another 25-16. The eventual winner of this classy match was to be decided at the tie-break and there POLICE did again an outstanding job to celebrate their second victory this season over Rabita and secure first place in Pool A. 29 points by Katarzyna Ewa Skowronska-Dolata were not enough for Rabita to seize the day, as young Serbian opposite Ana Bjelica paced POLICE with 22.
