ASSE-LENNIK join Dinamo MOSCOW in CEV Cup Challenge Round
2015 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Zellik, Belgium, January 21, 2015. Belgium’s Volley behappy2 ASSE-LENNIK knew they would ‘only’ have to win two sets from their return match with ISTANBUL BBSK of Turkey to make the Challenge Round of the 2015 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men. On the other hand, the guests from Turkey had to cruise to a 3:0 or 3:1 win to call for the golden set but this scenario was prevented by the hosts who cruised to a 3:0 home victory (25-19, 25-20, 27-25) powered by their opposite Robin Overbeeke and middle blocker Jasper Diefenbach to move on to the next round of Europe’s second most prestigious club competition.
The start of the match was close with the score levelled at 4 all; after ASSE-LENNIK got up by 8:6 at the first technical time-out, Diefenbach did some great work at the net and this way the hosts widened their lead up to 16:8 at the second mandatory stop. ISTANBUL BBSK managed to cut their deficit a bit (21:15) but the home side continued to play with great intensity to cash the first set at 25-19.
The second set followed a similar pattern but this time ASSE-LENNIK was off to a flying start (8:3) before ISTANBUL BBSK restored the balance at 14 all. The Belgians responded by scoring five points in a row and the fate of this set seemed already written at 24:17 for the home side. However, ISTANBUL BBSK provided a little more suspense as they cashed three consecutive points but a serving error by their middle blocker Ahmet Tocoglu ended the set at 25-20 for ASSE-LENNIK. At this stage, ASSE-LENNIK had already secured their ticket to the Challenge Round.
The third set was therefore meaningless but still turned into a close run. The Belgians got a small lead at 21:19 but missed out on two consecutive match balls at 24:22. ISTANBUL BBSK drew level at 24 and again at 25 before Overbeeke finished it off with another two straight points for the final 27-25 and 3:0.
