Star-studded TRENTINO show no mercy for underdogs CRAIOVA in CEV Cup quarter-finals
2015 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Craiova, Romania, January 13, 2015. Italy’s Energy T.I. Diatec TRENTINO lived up to their status and less than 48 hours after losing the final match of their national cup to Volley MODENA in Bologna they resumed their European campaign edging past Romania’s SCM U CRAIOVA in three sets (27-25, 25-22, 25-19) in the first round of the 2015 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men quarter-finals.
It was the match that the local Volleyball fans in Craiova had been waiting for weeks already since the city’s team was going to play the three-time winners of the CEV Volleyball Champions League and four-time club world champions, by far the most decorated Volleyball team of the last decade. 2,000 fans were in attendance at Sala Polivalenta and the atmosphere was just superb. At this stage of their adventure in the CEV Volleyball Cup, the home heroes around head coach Danut Pascu had to stand the most demanding task in their careers. The first set was very close and there CRAIOVA was almost close to bring it home but after that everything went quite easy for TRENTINO with Filippo Lanza top scoring in the end with 13 points.
CRAIOVA’s mentor Danut Pascu commented: “The experience of our opponents was evident in this match as they made a very few mistakes. We had a good first set but we ended up losing it. We started the second set well too and we got the lead, so we had high hopes for its remainder. However, we couldn’t do more but I am happy because we got something special with this match. I am referring to our fans, as we had 2,000 in attendance, and also to the unique experience that my players could make as they tried to raise their level to that of their opponents. It was a match with some spectacular rallies and the crowd enjoyed it.”
The return match is now scheduled for next January 21 in Italy.
