Atomic girls feel well ready for their CEV Cup debut
2015 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Sopot, Poland, December 10, 2014. After participating for three
consecutive seasons in the elite CEV Volleyball Champions League, Poland’s PGE Atom
Trefl SOPOT are this year playing in the CEV Volleyball Cup and after skipping
the first round following the withdrawal of Ukraine’s Severodonchanka
SEVERODONETSK, they will now make their debut on Thursday, December 11, playing Belgium’s Gea Happel
Amigos ZOERSEL.
“Before the
start of our national league we played VDK GENT Dames in a friendly tournament
held in Belgium,” says head coach Lorenzo Micelli. “This way we tried to
prepare for our international season and back then we played a good match
against the Belgians. Last season we had already played VDK GENT Dames in the
prelims of the Champions League and they definitely were a much stronger team.
Gea Happel are not among the top ranked teams in their national league and so
they are, at least potentially, an easier opponent for us. Nevertheless we have
to play with consistency, we need to stay focused on each fundamental of the
game and show our best Volleyball, especially by serving strong. We are
definitely ready for this clash.”
The Atomic
girls are currently ranked third in the Polish national league and have been
paced by Katarzyna Zaroslinska, so far the best opposite in the domestic
championship, whilst Klaudia Kaczorowska is ranked second among the best
servers. Zaroslinska received already three times the award for the MVP at the
end of the matches played by SOPOT so far and that same honour was claimed once
by Magdalena Damaske, Anna Miros, Zuzanna Efimienko, Agata Durajczyk and
Brittnee Cooper.
The team
around the experienced setter Izabela Belcik will be longing for two victories
in their matches with their Belgian opponent but are already thinking about the
next round where they most probably will be playing Italy’s Prosecco Doc-Imoco
CONEGLIANO. It would be a special clash since the current head coach and
assistant coach of the Italian ‘Panthers’, Nicola Negro and Rossano Bertocco,
both worked for SOPOT three years ago. CONEGLIANO have also signed two former
players of Atom, Alisha Glass and Neriman Ozsoy, who wore the jersey of the
team when they won first silver and then their first gold medal in the Polish
national league.
