Hopp Schwiiz Hopp!
2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women
Lugano, Switzerland, May 15, 2014. The teams competing this weekend at the second-round qualification tournament for the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Women taking place at the Resega ice hall in Lugano got finally the opportunity to test how it feels to play in such a splendid arena. The home heroines of Switzerland will start their campaign on Friday playing their toughest opponent in the Pool, Poland, while Ukraine and Latvia will open the program of the tournament earlier in the afternoon.
Switzerland’s head coach Timo Lippuner relies on the fighting spirit of his players: “Our Pool is very tough. Poland is definitely the strongest team in the group if you consider the quality of their players and their resume, so tomorrow we will immediately get a demanding test and will have to start the tournament with the right attitude. We have prepared for this tournament without playing any friendly matches. After Poland we will play Latvia and it won’t be easy at all for us since I know that last week they played excellent Volleyball at the first round tournament that was held in Sweden.”
Home captain Kristel Marbach confirms her coach’s views: “We haven’t played all together before the start of this tournament because two players, Inès Granvorka and Laura Unternährer, joined us only after the Club World Championship in Zurich. We also have added five young players to the roster; they are all very talented and full of enthusiasm. We start a new cycle with their help and addition. Everything here in Lugano looks just perfect and we are looking forward to the start of this adventure. We will start with the match against Poland where we have nothing to lose. I hope that we can get a good start also for the joy of our fans. In any case, Hopp Schwiiz!”
After the first round robin in Lugano, these teams will move to Poland for a second set of matches to be played in Bydgoszcz; the side eventually topping the charts of the Pool will book a ticket to the Final Round of the European Championship that will take place next year in the Netherlands and in Belgium.
