Izmir, Turkey, April 14, 2014. VakifBank ISTANBUL triumphed with this season’s Turkey’s national cup. The runners-up of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women made a spectacular U-turn against the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women gold medallists Fenerbahce SK. ISTANBUL to eventually win the decisive last match of the Final Four tournament of the Teledunya Super Cup at Izmir’s Atatürk Volleyball Hall by 3:2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-12).
In the first set, Fenerbahce went to the technical time-outs leading by 8-6 and 16-11 and managed to win it by 25-20. VakıfBank started better in the second set and went 14-11 ahead. Fenerbahce tied the score at 20-20 and went up to 22-20 following some successful spikes by Kim Yeon-Koung. Although VakıfBank tied the score once more at 23-23, it was not enough and Fenerbahce won the second set by 25-23, taking a 2:0 lead in the match.
VakıfBank was 9-7 ahead in the beginning of the third set. Fenerbahce caught up at 9-9 but with a 5-1 series, VakıfBank jumped to a 14-10 lead and went to the second technical time-out with a 16-13 lead. After the time-out Fenerbahce was very good at attacking and balanced the score at 21-21. With the help of their fans, VakıfBank managed to go 24-22 ahead and won the third set by 25-23.
VakıfBank got off to a very good start and was 13-4 ahead in the fourth set. VakıfBank dominated on the court and, with the spikes of Gözde Sonsirma and Jovana Brakocevic, it went 20-10 ahead to eventually win the set by 25-18.
VakıfBank started out strong in the tie-breaker set with a lead of 8-4 after some perfect spiking by Gözde Sonsirma. Fenerbahce narrowed the gap to 1 at 8-9, but VakıfBank did not let the opponents tie the score. It won the last set by 15-12 to rejoice victorious with the trophy.
VakifBank’s captain Gözde Sonsirma was named MVP of the Final Four tournament.
