Istanbul, Turkey, February 13, 2014. 1500 spectators met in Istanbul to witness the match between Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL and Omichka OMSK REGION and help their home heroines become the fourth team qualifying for the Final Four of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women. And so they did. The Turkish team comfortably cruised to a 3:0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16) final score to triumph victorious.
Five points in a row with Maja Poljak serving gave Eczacibasi a 9-4 lead in the first set. With good efforts from Natalya Mammadova, Omichka climbed back up to 9-11, but the home team rushed off again to prompt a technical time-out at 16-11. Once again, the Russian team fought back to a 2-point distance at 16-18 with Nancy Carrillo De La Paz contributing effectively in offense. Some great blocking from the home team and a couple of errors from Mammadova widened the gap to 23-18, and it was only a matter of time for the set to end at 25-19 as Poljak finished it off with a kill block.
Omichka got off to an early 3-point lead at 4-1, immediately followed by a 4-4 tie. The Russians maintained a narrow advantage for a while longer, but after tying at 12-12, Eczacibasi took control again through the end of the set. Omichka stayed close behind through 20-21, but three points in a row for the Turkish team with Neslihan Demir serving pretty much pre-determined the outcome of this set – 25-21.
Omichka coach Zoran Terzic made three changes to his starting seven for the third set. A tough battle for every point went on through 11-11. Neslihan Demir excelled once again to help her team rush up to a 14-11 lead, a 3-point gap that was maintained through 19-16. It was once again time for Demir to serve and 6 consecutive points for Eczacibasi were sufficient to end the set at 25-16 and the match at 3:0.
With 18 points, Neslihan Demir clinched her name as the best scorer of the match. Nancy Carrillo was responsible for 12 of Omichka’s points in the game.
