Azeryol storms back from away defeat to claim CEV Cup semifinal spot
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Baku, Azerbaijan, February 11, 2014. On Tuesday Azeryol BAKU qualified to the semis of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women downing Poland’s Polski Cukier Fakro MUSZYNA in straight sets (25-21, 25-10, and 25-19) thereby coming back strong after their 2:3 away defeat from last week. After missing on a spot in the Playoffs of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, Azeryol will now continue their European campaign and in the semis will – most probably – cross the ways of Turkey’s heavyweight Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL.
Azeryol fought back really strong to redeem for their away defeat edging past last year’s winners of the CEV Volleyball Cup and this way did even not need to play a golden set to book their ticket to the semis. Germany’s superstar Margareta Anna Kozuch and US American Jessica Susan Jones top scored for the home side with 15 points apiece with local heroine Odina Aliyeva also finishing the game in double digits (12). On the other side of the net Ivana Plchotova was the most prolific player for the likes of MUSZYNA with nine. Azeryol dominated the game in all fundamentals but performed particularly strong behind the service line with 12 aces five were scored by Kozuch) and also clearly out-blocked their Polish opponents 15:7 (Jones totaled nine block stuffs on her own).
The team around Brazilian-born head coach Angelo Vercesi will now wait for Wednesday’s game starring Fenerbahce SK and Czech champions Agel PROSTEJOV to get to know their opponent for the semis. Fenerbahce cruised to a straight victory last week in the Czech Republic and is the clear-cut favorite for that spot among the top four of this year’s CEV Volleyball Cup.
