Cannes, France, February 10, 2014. On Wednesday France’s RC CANNES and Turkey’s VakifBank ISTANBUL will be competing for qualification to the Final Four of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women.
After its three-point victory by 3:1 (21-25, 25-7, 25-18, 25-9), the Turkish team is in the ideal position to qualify. Will RC Cannes achieve the extraordinary performance needed to pull it off and make it to the final round or will logic prevail? The answer will come on Wednesday night from the French Riviera.
“Last week in Istanbul, we managed to play well during the first set and to cause problems for VakifBank. Then, we really struggled on the side-out and it paved the way for the opponents’ victory. They rapidly reached their cruise speed, showing all their physical power, their individual and collective skills, as well as their overall team stability, even after their libero’s injury,” remembers Yan Fang, head coach of CANNES. “My main goal for this return match at home is to see my team play at its best. The score and the result will simply be a consequence of the quality of our game. I am convinced that we can perform, individually and collectively, much better than during the first match, and I expect our players to use this game as the opportunity to really measure up against one of the best teams in Europe.”
Despite the fact that CANNES already managed to reverse the steam against VakifBank after a breathtaking Golden Set two years ago at the same stage of the competition, the Turkish team is in a much more favorable position than its French rival who must play all-in in this do-or-die battle.
The match on Wednesday starts at 20:00 local time at the Palais des Victoires in Cannes.
