Yellow Angels of Fenerbahce go straight to Challenge Round
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Istanbul, Turkey, January 22, 2014. Turkey’s Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL claimed one of the four spots available for the Challenge Round of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women after the “Yellow Angels” downed once again Finland’s LP SALO in straight sets (25-21, 27-25, and 25-14) as they had done also last week. In the next round of the competition “Fener” will play Czech champions Agel PROSTEJOV.
The home heroines were cheered by 1,000 fans at the Burhan Felek Volleyball Hall and the match got started with a spike killed by Korean superstar Kim Yeon-Koung. Even though Fenerbahce was struggling a bit in defense, they still could lead the way at the first technical time-out (8:6). LP SALO responded with good points claimed by their Estonian spiker Anu Ennok and Fenerbahce mentor Marcello Abbondanza eventually stopped the game by the score of 11 all. This helped the home side get back control of the operations, especially via the good performance of their libero Derya Cayirgan. The Finns were nevertheless able to keep the score tight – their Serbian spiker Dubravka Stojanovic being quite effective – and after another time-out by Abbondanza at 23:21, the “Yellow Angels” eventually brought it home with two consecutive points (25-21).
Fenerbahce started out strong also in the second set as LP SALO was showing some weaknesses especially in defense. The “Yellow Angels” moved the score up helped by Christina Bauer and Fernanda Garay while Aneta Havlickova was also on fire for the home team. Cayirgan was less consistent in reception in comparison with the first set but Fenerbahce kept it going with the spikes by Kim. Abbondanza briefly stopped the game at 23:22 and this short break helped the home side cruise to the 27-25 that sealed their qualification to the Challenge Round after last week’s straight victory in Finland.
At the beginning of the third set, Havlickova paced Fenerbahce but LP SALO responded by showing their character and some good actions in defense. Alisha Glass, Havlickova and Garay, plus Bauer helped Fenerbahce widen their lead and slowly but surely the “Yellow Angels” could set their sight on the finish line. Abbondanza even replaced Kim with Elif Onur Basaran by the score of 20:13 but this did not prevent Fenerbahce from comfortably cruising to the final 25-14.
