Galatasaray upsets Polish vice-champions Zaksa to claim their first victory in the tournament
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Istanbul, Turkey, December 18, 2013. Turkey’s underdogs Galatasaray FXTCR ISTANBUL claimed on Wednesday their first and only victory in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men as they beat Poland’s Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE in the last round of action for Pool G.
The hosts fought their way back twice from one set down; even though they did not stand any chance to make the Playoffs 12 or the Challenge Round of the CEV Volleyball Cup, Galatasaray played with glowing hearts in what was their last match this year in the European Cups. Still Zaksa caught a very good start winning the opening set (21-25) before Galatasaray clawed back from 10:16 in the second to draw level at 16 and then bring it home at 25-23. The response by their rivals was immediately there as Zaksa won another close set (20-25) before Galatasaray seized the fourth after a dramatic final rush (26-24) to also impose their rule in the tie-break (15-10). As they lost this game, Zaksa – who had ended the last edition in fourth place – bid farewell to the CEV Volleyball Champions League waiting for the results from the other groups to know if they were going to be promoted to the Challenge Round of the CEV Cup.
