European Cups season is over for German champions SCHWERINER SC
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women
Schwerin, Germany, December 17, 2013. RC CANNES confirmed their role as the second strongest force in preliminary Pool D of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women as on Tuesday they edged SCHWERINER SC of Germany in straight sets (25-14, 25-16, and 25-20) to finish their campaign with a record of four victories in six games. SCHWERINER SC, on the other hand, could not change the negative course of this year’s adventure and finished the competition without scoring a single victory.
The winners of last year’s Bundesliga and German Cup were sidelined right from the start of the season by some injuries but still hoped to give their fans something to cheer about on Tuesday night. On the other side, RC CANNES could play quite relaxed for the players from the French Riviera had already pocketed last week their pass to the Playoffs 12 and could not challenge Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL for the leadership in the Pool.
The match did not start well at all for the home side as SCHWERINER SC quickly trailed 1:6 in the opening set. The hosts showed good Volleyball but made too many mistakes to be able to keep the pace of their opponents. After losing some important matches in the past few weeks, the local heroines also lacked the necessary self-confidence and they quickly lost that set with the score of 14-25. The second set followed a similar plot with SCHWERINER SC off to a disastrous start and RC CANNES imposing their rule. The hosts looked tired both mentally and physically and also the second set was quickly gone (16-25). Germany’s champions could regroup in the third where the supporters followed classy Volleyball actions as the score stayed close halfway through (8:11, 12:14). After that, RC CANNES showed their experience and paced by their team captain Nadia Centoni, the guests swept their opponents in straight sets (20-25).
At the end of their European campaign, the players of SCHWERINER SC will enjoy a short Christmas break before on December 26 they fly to Basel to participate in the Women’s Top Volley International Tournament that is taking place there every year before the end of the New Year’s Eve. They will then re-start their adventure in the Bundesliga on January 8 playing Allianz MTV STUTTGART and hope they will be able to qualify to the next edition of the CEV Volleyball Champions League by retaining their title in the national league.
