Triple CL champions TRENTINO stun LUGANO to book their Playoffs spot
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Lugano, Switzerland, December 10, 2013. Italy’s Diatec TRENTINO prolonged their winning streak in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men to five consecutive matches as on Tuesday they routed Switzerland’s rookie Energy Investments LUGANO in three sets (25-16, 25-12, and 25-15) to claim their qualification to the Playoffs 12.
The three-time champions of Europe’s elite club competition displayed their quality to dominate the scene at the Resega Ice Hockey Hall as they exploited every single weakness showed by the home heroes around head coach Mario Motta. Even though they showed their usual fighting spirit, the home “Dragons” as they are nicknamed in Switzerland showed too much respect for their star-studded opponent and even their Brazilian star Felipe Banderò could not do much to stop the Italian storm.
TRENTINO claimed an early lead in each set and LUGANO could never find a way to bounce back. The difference between a side that has been a major Volleyball force for about a decade and the inexperienced home heroes was evident. This defeat basically ends the adventure of LUGANO in the competition though there is still one more game to play next week in Turkey against Arkas IZMIR. “It was a very nice experience and from now on we will focus on the national league where we want to retain our title to possibly get the right to compete in the next edition of the Champions League” commented Mario Motta.
“Since they were playing at home we were very cautious and afraid of what LUGANO could have showed tonight” adds TRENTINO mentor Roberto Serniotti. “Knowing the result of the other match played tonight in Berlin, we knew we had to take maximum points from this game to cement our leadership in the Pool.”
