ACH Volley wins Middle European League for fifth time
News from the clubs
Bratislava, Slovakia, March 18, 2013. Slovenia’s multiple champions ACH Volley LJUBLJANA recently claimed their fifth title in the Middle European League by overpowering Austrian rival SK Posojilnica AICH/DOB in the final 3:1 (28-26, 23-25. 25-16, and 25-20).
The previous matches played in this year’s MEVZA season between these teams forecasted a tough title battle, and so it was. Both teams were rather reserved at the beginning of the match and made a couple of errors, but by the middle of the first set the match evolved into a real battle. The first set was levelled up to 25:25, when Alen Šket, top scorer in the match with 25 points, set the final score at 27-25. A similar scenario unfolded in the second set that AICH/DOB eventually won at 25-23. ACH Volley dominated the third set from the beginning and cruised to a speedy 25-16, especially through good blocking and defence. The last, and fourth set was again a real thriller as the teams were levelled all the way to 19:19, but then Alen Šket tipped the scale in favour of the Slovenians with his serve and attacks (25-20).
Another Austrian team, Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK, also a Champions League participant like ACH Volley, claimed third place winning an almost lost match against Unicef BRATISLAVA (3:2; 25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, and 17-15).
The head coach of ACH Volley Luka Slabe was really satisfied with his team’s performance in the final, especially with their patience: “We knew that AICH/DOB is a very good team and difficult to beat. I have to congratulate my players, they did very well. Both teams were patient and tactically well prepared. Besides the match against Generali UNTERHACHING in the prelims of the Champions League, this was one of the toughest games for me this season”.
