Rabita BAKU finishes prelims with immaculate record
2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women
Baku, Azerbaijan, December 11, 2012. Even though the outcome of their last match in the prelims with Agel PROSTEJOV was not going to impact on the final standings of Pool B, the silver medalists from the 2012 FIVB Club World Championship of Rabita BAKU did not slow their pace down and cruised to a speedy 3:0 (25-17, 25-23, and 25-15) to finish the League Round with an immaculate record of six wins in as many matches.
Serbian spiker Sanja Starovic – who is playing for Rabita for the fifth consecutive year – set the tone in the early phases of the opening set before Agel PROSTEJOV could fight back via some good play contributed by Brazilian Juliana Gomes. However, middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo and setter Katarzyna Skorupa were able to restore Rabita’s supremacy and the home girls did finally pocket the first set with the score of 25-17.
Agel PROSTEJOV caught an excellent start in the second set going up by three points before Rabita got back on track helped by Starovic and the incredible defense actions by libero Brenda Castillo. Rabita got up by two at the second technical time-out (16:14) and that small cushion was maintained up to the end (25-23).
Rabita stormed out to a terrific 9:1 in set 3 and dominated the scene anchored by the attacks scored by Natasa Krsmanovic and Dobriana Rabadzhieva.
“I would like to congratulate Rabita for making it to the Playoffs and for their great campaign in the prelims. I wish them good luck for the next stage of the competition” says Agel head coach Miroslav Cada. “Rabita is a very good team and they fully deserved this win” adds team captain Solange Soares.
“This was our last match in the prelims and you can’t change much. It was still difficult to stay focused and concentrated but we need to do this every time we play” stresses Rabita mentor Marcello Abbondanza. “I am happy we have made it to the Playoffs 12 and hope we’ll prolong our winning streak” concludes captain Mira Golubovic.
