MACERATA opens season by claiming Italian Supercup
News from the clubs
Macerata, Italy, October 4, 2012. Lube Banca Marche MACERATA opened the domestic season by claiming this past Sunday Italy’s Supercup for the third time at the end of a dramatic match that lasted for 5 sets and whereby the 2012 national champions edged TRENTINO Diatec.
The game was played in Modena and attended by a massive crowd of 5’000 spectators, with the side mentored by Alberto Giuliani being paced by Ivan Zaytsev who scored 23 points including also 7 aces. Zaytsev is one of the latest additions to the roster of Lube Banca Marche, thereby bringing to 5 the guys included in the roster that are also part of Italy’s national team (the others being Jiri Kovar, Dragan Travica, Simone Parodi and Cristian Savani).
“We are happy with this win but we have to work hard every day to improve the quality of our play and get ready for the most important matches of the season, including those coming up in the CEV Volleyball Champions League” said Giuliani.
Lube Banca Marche only slightly modified its roster since last year via the addition of three players, namely Ivan Zaytsev, France’s libero Hubert Henno and Serbian opposite Sasa Starovic, for a total of 7 guys who participated in the London Olympics this past summer. The arrival of Zaytsev – who last year played in Rome – compensates for the departure of Igor Omrcen, who has left the club to move to Japan and play there for the JT Thunders in Hiroshima.
“We want to play a very important role in all competitions but our priority remains the 2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League. The club won that trophy ten years ago and it would be fabulous to bring it back. We know we will cross very strong competitors along the way but we have a good team and want to go for the maximum result” concluded Giuliani.
