Hypo Tirol prolongs winning streak in Austria's national league
News from the National Federations
Vienna, Austria, April 24, 2012. While the winning streak of TRENTINO Volley and PGE Skra BELCHATOW was interrupted this past weekend in Italy’s and Poland’s national leagues, in Austria Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK retained its title for a fourth consecutive year after finishing with a 3:1 home win – and a 4:1 as the finals were played with the format “best of seven” – the Championship series with Posojilnica AICH/DOB.
This is the sixth time in history the club from Tyrol finishes atop of the charts. “It feels just great” says captain and local hero Daniel Gavan, “especially as this is the first time we can celebrate this achievement together with our fantastic supporters. I also have to state that AICH/DOB played a superb match tonight, so my congratulations to them for such a terrific performance. Today we did not play with the right consistency from the start up to the end but our win is the only thing that really counts”. This was the sixth crown for Gavan in the national league out of 12 finals throughout his career. “I still hope this was not the last time I joined the Championship series” he joked.
On Monday after losing the opening set, Posojilnica stormed back to claim set 2, while Hypo Tirol re-asserted its supremacy in the third. The guests from Kärnten dictated the tempo of the match for most of the time in set 4 going up 6:3, 9:5, 10:6 and 15:13, but Hypo Tirol clawed back regularly thereby leveling the score for four times. After Posojilnica had got to the front once more at 22:21, the final rush fully belonged to Hypo Tirol that could wrap it up at 25-23 and finish the Championship series with a fourth win. “We shall nevertheless be proud of our performance” singles out AICH/DOB mentor Martin Micheu. “We played with glowing hearts and did not have that much luck in the fourth set, but we were a worthy finalist”.
