Romanian rookie 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA is not afraid of iron Pool
News from the clubs

Constanta, Romania, November 16, 2011. Romania’s 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA will debut this coming November 29 in the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League via a home match against Azerrail BAKU waiting for additional classy games with the other rivals included in the same Pool, namely the reigning champions of VakifBank TTelekom ISTANBUL and Italy’s Norda Foppapedretti BERGAMO.
“We are honored to play here in Constanta against some of the world’s finest Volleyball teams. VakifBank claimed the CEV Volleyball Champions League this past March while BERGAMO is the winner of the Italian national league, having also back-to-back wins in the Champions League from the seasons 2009 and 2010. Azerrail is an up-and-coming force with a budget that exceeds 1 million € and that was once managed by the current Azerbaijani Head of State. We will try to live up to the expectations and play decently against so powerful rivals. It won’t be easy but we want to perform well” says club President Cristian Zgabercea.
The group will be mentored by Darko Zakoc who is also the head coach of the Romanian national team. “I have some experience from this competition and I know that the result of the matches is not necessarily linked to the fame or budget of the club. You always have some surprises and even though we have to be seen as outsiders, still we join this competition with high goals. We hope to be well prepared for the home match with Azerrail” states Zakoc.
The players are delighted with the opportunity to test out their potential with some of the strongest clubs out there: “We are very happy that our sports hall here in Constanta fulfills all requirements to host matches of the Champions League. We were assigned to a tough group but we shall be ready and in a good shape for the start of the competition” adds team captain Claudia Gavrilescu.
“Our heads are up and even though the Pool is difficult we are more than ready for this adventure” concludes Elena Butnaru, a former member of the Romanian national team who spent the last few years in Italy.
