Teuta wins Albania's Federation Cup to commemorate recently died team player
News from the National Federations
Tirana, Albania, October 9, 2011. The guys of Teuta DURRËS claimed this past weekend Albania’s Federation Cup, the competition that officially opened the 2011/2012 season in the Balkan country. Teuta defeated the archrivals of Studenti TIRANA in straight sets in what was a very special match as the competition was re-named after Juxhin Guza, a player from Durrës who prematurely passed away only some days ago in a car crash.
The tournament organized by the Albanian Volleyball Federation took place at the “Ramazan Njala” sports hall in Durrës with the participation of the four best teams from the past season. Teuta claimed the first semifinal with a speedy 3:0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21) to defeat Vllaznia while Studenti qualified for the final match by edging Tirana also in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-11).
Teuta played very motivated in front of their many fans and eventually retained the trophy for the third consecutive year with another 3:0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-18) to defeat Studenti. Tirana got bronze after seeing off Vllaznia in the classification match 3/4.
The players of Teuta – that will be representing Albania in the 2012 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – donated the trophy to the family of their friend Juxhin Guza and played with his name printed on the back side of their jerseys. The first ball of the final match against Studenti was tossed by Guza’s sister, Rozalba, who is also a Volleyball player for the likes of Teuta DURRËS. After the Federation Cup, the men’s national league is set to start this week with the matches of the first round.
