TARGOVISTE and BEZIERS to battle for #CEVCupW semi-final spot in Zagreb
CEV Volleyball Cup 2021 - Women

Zagreb, Croatia, December 8, 2020. C.S.M. TARGOVISTE and BEZIERS Angels will lock horns on Wednesday with a spot in the semis of the CEV Volleyball Cup 2021 at stake. On Tuesday, the Romanians needed three sets only to cruise past hosts Mladost ZAGREB (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) while BEZIERS Angels did not have to play their 8th Final match at all following the withdrawal of Volero LE CANNET from the competition.

The match between Mladost and C.S.M. TARGOVISTE took place in the Croatian capital without any spectators to comply with the measures in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Birthday girl Mika Grbavica, who turned 19 on Tuesday, could not make herself a present as Mladost lost to C.S.M. TARGOVISTE in three sets.

Despite their 0-3 loss, the hosts put up a good fight but the Romanian team were clearly the better side on the day.

Elsewhere, Serbia’s Tent OBRENOVAC and Hungary’s Vasas Obuda BUDAPEST will battle for another spot in the semis of the competition after claiming their respective 8th Final matches with OK SIP ŠEMPETER (3-0) and Minchanka MINSK (3-2).

The players and coaching staff of Vasas Obuda BUDAPEST celebrate their come-from-behind win over Minchanka MINSK

In a truly thrilling match that lasted for five sets, Vasas Obuda showed nerves of steel at the end of the tiebreak to celebrate a 3-2 victory over Minchanka MINSK of Belarus (21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22, 16-14), thus completing their comeback from two sets down. Their next opponent will be hosts Tent OBRENOVAC of Serbia, who needed three sets only to edge past OK SIP ŠEMPETER of Slovenia (25-21, 25-11, 25-17). Minchanka had claimed a comfortable 2-0 lead in their matchup with Vasas, but opposite Sanja Gamma tallied 36 points in the end to help the Hungarian team mount an amazing comeback. Sanja Kaličanin contributed to the victory as well, registering as many as six blocks for Vasas in the process.

The hosts set the tempo of the game from the very beginning in their matchup with OK SIP ŠEMPETER and never looked back, especially courtesy of their solid blocking game. The second set was literally one-sided, ending at 25-11, with the visitors obviously struggling to keep the pace of the home side. The third and eventually final set was a bit of a rollercoaster instead, until Tent OBRENOVAC recaptured control of the game halfway through to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory. The captain of the Serbian team, Jelena Lazić top scored with 20 points, but Jovana Cvetković had an impressive all round game with the best percentage of perfect reception (48%), three blocks and three aces to her name.
