Moldova stun Spain to stay in contention for ticket to #EuroVolleyM
CEV EuroVolley 2021

Nicosia, Cyprus, September 1, 2020. Moldova caused a sensation on Tuesday as they beat pre-favourites Spain 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19) at the CEV EuroVolley 2021 Men Pool D qualifier in Nicosia. The result adds even more anticipation and excitement in the race to seize a coveted spot at next year’s Final Round, since there is not a single team left with an unblemished record in this tournament. Let us remind you that live streaming of all matches from Nicosia is available on the CEV’s OTT platform EuroVolleyTV!

Spain had to accept their first setback in Pool D before the competition resumes on September 4 for the second round robin tournament, which will be taking place in Nicosia as well. Moldova came back after losing the first set to improve their win-loss record to 2-1 after on Monday they had beaten hosts Cyprus 3-0.

“You may regard our victory over Spain as a surprise, but we delivered an excellent performance,” said top scorer Mihai Voleanschii, who recorded as many as 31 points in the process. “I think we deserved this victory. We owe a lot of respect to Spain and therefore the feeling resulting from this victory tastes even better.”

Top scorer Atvars Ozolins celebrates a 3-0 victory for Latvia over hosts Cyprus

Later in the evening, Latvia claimed a comprehensive 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-11) victory over hosts Cyprus. The hosts tried hard to put up a fight but they could not quite succeed in doing so. Latvia, Spain and Moldova all share the same win-loss record (2-1) after completion of the first three days of competition in Nicosia. Cyprus are yet to win a match and they will be trying their best to put an end to their losing streak when competition resumes on Friday. “It was an easy victory but we did not expect that the match with Cyprus would be so easy since their previous game were so close,” said Latvian player Atvars Ozolins, who top scored with 15 points. “We made it one step closer to qualifying for EuroVolley but there are still three matches to come.”

On Friday, September 4, the competition will resume with Moldova playing Latvia before hosts Cyprus take on Spain later in the evening.
