Spain make it two wins from two matches in Nicosia
CEV EuroVolley 2021

Nicosia, Cyprus, August 31, 2020. The Red Lynxes of Spain claimed on Monday their second victory in as many matches at the CEV EuroVolley Qualifier Pool D in Nicosia. In a clash featuring Sunday’s winners, Spain beat Latvia 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 16-25, 25-19) to remain the only team with an immaculate record in the group. The eventual pool winners will secure their participation in the final round of EuroVolley 2021 Men co-hosted by Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia and Finland in the late summer of next year.

After dropping a set in yesterday’s match with hosts Cyprus, Spain found the right solutions after experiencing a little setback in the third set of their game with Latvia to celebrate another victory. Latvia proved to be a worthy opponent, with their star player Hermans Egleskalns top scoring with 22 points.

“This is a very important victory but even though we currently lead in the pool with two wins, nothing is over yet, since we have more matches to come, including another one against Latvia,” said Spanish outside hitter Victor Rodriguez Perez. “It has been difficult to deal with the break imposed by the coronavirus pandemic but we would like to win as many matches as possible despite the lack of preparation.”

Daniil Cozlovschi celebrates the first victory for Moldova in Pool D

Later in the evening, in a match featuring the losers of Sunday’s opening fixtures, Moldova secured their first victory in the competition, with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 shutout of hosts Cyprus. The home side suffered their second straight loss instead and they will be trying to perform better on Tuesday when playing against Latvia, hoping to make far fewer mistakes than they recorded against Moldova. “This is a very important victory for us and we will be trying to perform in the same way in the remaining matches in order to stay in contention for qualification,” said Moldovan player Daniil Cozlovschi. Sotiris Siapanis top scored in the match, piling up 13 points for Cyprus, as Serghei Predius recorded 12 for Moldova.
