Estonia secure Silver #EuroLeagueW Final Four spot after away win at Switzerland
2018 CEV Volleyball Silver European League - Women

Luxembourg, June 3, 2018. Estonia secured a spot in the Final Round of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Silver European League – Women following their 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15) win over Switzerland on Sunday, while the Swiss have to be content with third place in Pool A. The Finals will be taking place in Nyköping, Sweden on June 16-17, 2018.

Kertu Laak of Estonia topped the scoring list after registering 21 points. Teammate Anu Ennok, who has been playing for Swiss top squad Sm’ AESCH Pfeffingen since 2015, added 12 points to the Estonian tally.

Switzerland prevailed in the opening set due to a strong performance at the net. The Swiss scored five block points in the first set, while only booking four in total in the remaining three sets.

Estonia were able to notch up their performance after the loss in the first set. While the team from the Baltics only turned every third attack into a point in the first, the players coached by Andrei Ojamets became more cold-blooded in the offence to convert every second attack in the remainder of the match.

Laura Kuenzler, outside spiker of Switzerland: “Of course we are disappointed after this loss. I think we lost due to the lack of experience and self-esteem in our team. I am convinced we could have played better than we did today, but we lost our rhythm after the win in the first set. We missed our big goal of the #EuroLeagueW campaign, but we do not want to hang our heads. We are willing to come back stronger in the last game against Sweden on Wednesday.”

Timothy Lippuner, coach of Switzerland: “In my opinion, not all of our players were able to show their best today. This might be due to the lack of experience in our team. It is a pity, since I am convinced that we could have won this game if the entire team had played at a good level. Nevertheless, we have to take the positives out of this game and learn from this defeat as we want to give it our best shot in the last game against Sweden on Wednesday.”

Kertu Laak, opposite spiker of Estonia: “Reaching the Final Round of this competition was our big goal – and we are really happy that we made it. After the loss in the first set, we stayed focused and reduced the number of unforced errors. On the other hand, we were finally able to put more pressure on the Swiss team with our strong serving game. I think this eventually made the difference in this matchup. We have improved a lot as a team over the last games and now we want to go for the maximum goal in the Final Round as well.”
