Olympiacos make history with Challenge Cup title
2018 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women
Bursa, Turkey, April 11, 2018. Olympiacos PIRAEUS made history on Wednesday late afternoon as they claimed the title of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women after storming to a 3-1 away victory (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16) in the second round of the final with titleholders BURSA BBSK of Turkey. Since last week they had lost 2-3 at home, Olympiacos did not have to play a Golden Set to determine the eventual winners of the competition.
• Olympiacos celebrate their first title in the competition – and the first for Greece as well.
• BURSA BBSK failed to make it three gold medals in four years following their previous successes in 2015 and 2017.
• Olympiacos made amends for the loss they suffered last year at the hands of BURSA BBSK. Saskia Hippe top scored for Olympiacos with 17 points followed by Jana-Franziska Poll and Stephanie Niemer with 15 and 12, respectively.
• These players chiefly contributed to a truly historic success for Olympiacos and Greek Volleyball as well.
• Emiliya Dimitrova paced BURSA BBSK in their losing effort with 24 points as Dutch middle blocker Yvon Beliën added 11 to the tally of the home side.
• The team captain of Olympiacos, Styliani Christodoulou, received the award for the Most Valuable Player of the finals.
A number of illustrious guests - DenizBank Regional Manager Burak Özkaya, the President of the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, Mr Alinur Aktas, Turkish Volleyball Federation President, Mr Mehmet Akif Üstündağ, CEV Supervisor and ECC Member Riet Ooms and CEV Vice-President Mr Özkan Mutlugil, presented the medals and the trophy for the eventual winners and runners-up of the competition.
