Azerbaijan set sights on historic European League crown
2016 CEV Volleyball European League - Women

Baku, Azerbaijan, July 2, 2016. On Sunday afternoon Azerbaijan will be trying to cap their campaign in the 2016 edition of the CEV Volleyball European League – Women with a historic gold medal when hosting Slovakia for the re-match of the ‘grand finale’. On Thursday Azerbaijan recorded a 3-1 away victory in the first round contested in Nitra.

Team captain Odina Bayramova said: “Though we had some problems and went through ups and downs when playing Slovakia a few days ago, we eventually were able to win that match. It was very important for us to win the first round of the finals. Now we are ready for the re-match, which we will be playing on home soil here in Baku. We will do everything we can to win this second round of the finals with Slovakia in order to achieve our ultimate goal – to play in the FIVB World Grand Prix in 2017.”

Azerbaijan made a lot of service errors in the first set of their first match with European League rookies Slovakia but did not lose focus and eventually won it. Slovakia responded by playing very much focussed to claim the second set before Azerbaijan imposed their quality to ultimately seal a 3-1 away win.

Azerbaijan setter Shafagat Habibova: “We won the first round of the finals and of course we are happy with this. However, we are not going to stop here. We are going to play the re-match in Baku and I assume it will be a tough game. Slovakia obviously will try to win but we will be doing our best to claim the re-match as well. I am hoping that many fans will come to the sports hall to support us.”

FIVB Coaches Course comes to an end

Right on the eve of the European League Final, the FIVB Coaches Course Level II organised in Baku came to an end in the Azerbaijani capital. Azerbaijan Volleyball Federation (AVF) Secretary General Elshan Ismayilov addressed all attendees in the closing ceremony thanking them for their participation and wishing them the best of luck for their future endeavours. “I think everybody was pleased with the organisation of this course and I hope that more will follow in the future,” he said.

The participants were all pleased with the organisation of the course and expressed their wish that Team Azerbaijan will emerge victorious from the European League Final on Sunday, July 3.

Mr Jeyhun Rahimov said: “I hope everyone was pleased with the level of the course organised by the AVF and the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan. We are always ready to support the Azerbaijan Volleyball Federation and their activities.”
