Germany to attempt comeback in effort to retain European League crown
2014 CEV Volleyball European League - Women

Rüsselsheim, Germany, July 18, 2014. The very last act of the 2014 CEV Volleyball European League – Women is coming up on Saturday, July 19, with the second leg of the final match starring the national teams of Germany and Turkey. The home heroines will try to storm back after their 1:3 defeat from last Wednesday in Bursa to call for the golden set and try to retain the title they won last year in Varna, Bulgaria. Turkey, on the other hand, will try to exploit the edge they got with their home victory to seize the crown for the first time after settling for the silver medal in 2009 and 2011. The winners of the European League will be guaranteed a spot in the 2015 edition of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.

Germany’s head coach Giovanni Guidetti and middle-blocker Jennifer Pettke addressed the media on Friday sharing their feeling and expectations ahead of the match scheduled for Saturday at 1 pm local time in Rüsselsheim. Their goal is clear: to win the return match as well as the golden set that would follow.

“We want to win this game and then also the golden set,” Pettke said while addressing the journalists first. She was one of Germany’s best players last Wednesday in Bursa and knows what the team needs to do in order to seize the day in Rüsselsheim: “In Bursa we had problems to find our way into the game and we made too many mistakes. We are a young team and therefore we get nervous quite easily. However, I do not think that this will be an issue on Saturday. I am thrilled and look forward to a great atmosphere as we play before our crowd.”

Giovanni Guidetti added: “I wasn’t happy after the first game. I can accept a defeat when our opponent is better but this wasn’t the case in Bursa. We made too many mistakes, so it was mainly our fault. Turkey has a lot of players with great experience but they do not play in a way that we can’t handle. I would be very proud of my players if we reach the golden set; once we make it there, what happens next is not entirely in our hands. To play a golden set is like a lottery.”

The final match of the 2014 CEV Volleyball European League – Women in Rüsselsheim is attracting much attention from VIPs and media alike. The match will be attended by the President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation, Özkan Mutlugil, by the Honorary President of the German Volleyball Federation (DVV), Werner von Moltke, and Turkey’s Consul in Frankfurt, Mr. Ufuk Ekici. CEV Vice President Jan Hronek will represent the European Volleyball Confederation and be the Supervisor of the match.

The match will be broadcast live on Sport1, while ARD Sportschau and ZDF Sportstudio will also report on it in their evening shows. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Frankfurter Neue Presse, Wiesbadener Kurier, Main-Spitze, and Rüsselsheimer Echo will all follow the final with their reporters on site as many Turkish media will be doing as well.

The final will be also streamed live and for free on LAOLA1.tv
