Unet Yamamay through to semis to remain in contention for third CEV Cup crown
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Busto Arsizio, Italy, March 15, 2017. On Wednesday night, Italy’s Unet Yamamay BUSTO ARSIZIO secured their progression to the semis of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women after claiming also the remake of their quarterfinal fixture with Hungary’s national champions Linamar – BÉKÉSCSABAI RSE (3-0; 25-20, 25-8, 25-22).

The home team coached by Marco Mencarelli delivered a very solid performance – and did so especially in the second set, which they dominated from start to end. Brayelin Martinez top scored for the ‘Butterflies’ with 14 points, with outside spiker Valentina Fiorin and middle blocker Federica Stufi contributing to their team’s success with 13 and 10 markers, respectively. USA-born Sarah Clement paced the visitors with nine points. Some 1,200 fans witnessed a triumphal march by the home stars – with Unet Yamamay remaining in contention for the top honours in the 2017 edition of the CEV Volleyball Cup, a competition the club previously won in 2010 and 2012.

Unet Yamamay made the difference with their blocks in the first set (they registered five in the end) but Irina Smirnova tried to keep the score tight and she succeeded in doing so up to 21-20 before Noemi Signorile and Beatrice Berti helped the ‘Butterflies’ cruise to a 25-20 win. The second set was literally one-sided with Berti standing behind the service line as the score moved from 10-6 to 20-6 for the home side, with Martinez finishing the set on six points of her own. Linamar tried to respond in the third set but Unet Yamamay’s defence and blocking game were just too much to stand and the match ended at 25-22 for the home side.
