Pomì CASALMAGGIORE rout German opponent to shape up Italian derby in CEV Cup semis
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Cremona, Italy, March 16, 2017. Pomì CASALMAGGIORE progressed to the semi-finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women after on Wednesday night they stamped a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-14, 26-24) in their second matchup with Germany’s Allianz MTV STUTTGART. In the next round of the competition, CASALMAGGIORE will play an Italian derby with Unet Yamamay BUSTO ARSIZIO.

The team coached by Giovanni Caprara had little problems to control the game, even though the first set was a bit more of a closer affair. After that, CASALMAGGIORE set the pace from start to end of the second set and by leading 2-0, Pomì secured their spot in the semis of the CEV Volleyball Cup. CASALMAGGIORE had to come from behind in the third set but eventually rallied to a 3-0 victory as Carmen Turlea, Anastasia Guerra, Lucia Bosetti and Valentina Tirozzi delivered a very solid performance – as much as did eventual MVP Lauren Gibbemeyer.

Giovanni Caprara, head coach of Pomì CASALMAGGIORE: “We performed better than we did in our last national league match in Bergamo and I especially liked the fact that we were so aggressive. We had to come from behind in the third set but my players did a good job and eventually sealed the victory. Since Samanta Fabris is injured, we are still trying to find a solution for the opposite hitter – we have two options with Valentina Tirozzi and Carmen Turlea, as for Anastasia Guerra I prefer her to play as outside hitter. In the semis we will play Unet Yamamay BUSTO ARSIZIO and we expect to play that same team in the Playoffs of the national league too; before that, we will have to iron a few things out.”

Lucia Bosetti, outside hitter of Pomì CASALMAGGIORE: “It was very important to win this match and I am happy that we did it in three sets, so that we could save energy for the matches ahead. I did like very much our attitude, since we played really aggressively tonight.”

Guillermo Naranjo Hernandez, head coach of Allianz MTV STUTTGART: “I am happy we could reach the quarterfinals. We made many mistakes but we could not achieve more. I am still satisfied with the performance of my team.”
