Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR claim remake of Slovenian derby with Calcit
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Ljubljana, Slovenia, January 27, 2017. Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR claimed also the re-match of the Slovenian derby with Calcit LJUBLJANA in the 16th Finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women. Two weeks ago, Nova KBM Branik had cruised to a 3-1 home victory and on Thursday night, they rushed to a comprehensive 3-0 win (25-21, 25-15, 25-16) at Tivoli hall in the Slovenian capital. In the next round, Nova KBM Branik will play Galatasaray ISTANBUL, as the Turks easily claimed their respective matches with Switzerland’s VFM FRANCHES-MONTAGNES.

The reigning Slovenian champions have not recorded a single victory this season so far in their matches with rivals and national cup winners Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR. On Thursday night, MARIBOR easily won the first and second sets to secure their progression to the next stage of the competition – and they easily took the third set as well. The hosts made many mistakes in reception, with their success rate standing at a low 31% - and MARIBOR outplayed Calcit in all other aspects of the game too.

Iza Mlakar and Marina Kaucic top scored for Nova KBM Branik with 14 and 13 points as Olivera Kostic and Tina Grudina paced Calcit with nine and seven, respectively.

Nicola Negro, head coach of Calcit LJUBLJANA: “Two weeks ago in Maribor, we played three sets at a high level but today we were not aggressive enough with our attacking game – and not disciplined when it comes to our reception and blocking. If you play as we did, it becomes impossible to win against MARIBOR.”

Bruno Najdic, head coach of Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR: “Both teams wanted to come out on top in the first set and this resulted in many mistakes on both sides of the net. Maybe this was not our best match this season, but we played with consistency. Before the end of the first set, we found our rhythm and we continued to play in the same way in the second set and until the end of the match. I am satisfied with this victory.”
