Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR through to second stage of women’s CEV Cup

Maribor, Slovenia, December 21, 2016. After claiming a 3-0 victory a week ago in Paris, Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR cruised to a 3-1 win (20-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-14) om home soil over SF PARIS Saint Cloud to secure their spot in the 16th Finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women.
The hosts came out with all guns blazing quickly leading 3-0 but PARIS scored six points in a row with Alessia Fiesoli standing behind the service line to move the score from 6-all to 12-6 in their favour. However, soon afterwards Nika Blagne contributed to a positive run for MARIBOR and Nova KBM Branik edged ahead again at 14-13. As the match progressed, PARIS played better and better and with the help of Alexandra Dascalu the visitors won the first set 25-20.
Iza Mlakar and Dascalu were the leading actors for MARIBOR and PARIS respectively in the second set. The visitors claimed a 19-15 lead but the serves of Sara Najdic, and some points by Sasa Planinsec and Blagne, helped MARIBOR close in. The hosts scored five times in a row to move ahead at 20-19 before Mlakar ended the second set 25-22 for the home side.
SF PARIS Saint Cloud responded with a 4-0 lead in the third set but MARIBOR closed in at 6-8. Blagne served strong and paved the way to a 13-10 advantage for the Slovenian team and an ace by Marina Kaucic made it 17-11 for the hosts. MARIBOR comfortably took the third set 25-15 and with it secured their progression to the next stage of the CEV Volleyball Cup.
Slovenia’s vice-champions continued to set the pace of the game also in the fourth set (8-6, 16-9) with Mlakar, Blagne and Planinsec contributing to a compelling 25-14 score to seal a 3-1 win for the home side.
