TOURS VB fight back from heavy loss to seize CEV Cup crown before sell-out crowd!
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Tours, France, April 15, 2017. TOURS VB completed a mission impossible as the French team stormed back after losing the first round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men Finals in straight sets to claim their rematch with Italy’s TRENTINO Diatec by 3-1 (31-29, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23) and also the all-deciding Golden Set (15-13) to celebrate their second European trophy in history. They had previously taken the much-coveted crown of the CEV Volleyball Champions League in 2005 in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The atmosphere at Robert Grenon sports hall was somehow electrifying, as everyone knew how much was at stake in the last match of the season for TOURS VB. Each set was a close race and even though TRENTINO Diatec put up a fight from start to end, TOURS VB came out victorious in the rematch and from the Golden Set as well. It was also the first time ever TOURS VB had contested a European final at home.
TOURS VB put aside the disappointment resulting from their early elimination in the national league and national cup to celebrate a truly historic achievement. “This season was somehow special. We won this trophy after playing before such an amazing audience. The season has finished for us and it finished with a happy end,” said an ecstatic TOURS VB assistant coach Thomas Royer.
The home hero, team captain and eventual MVP of the Finals, Czech opposite David Konecny, bid farewell to TOURS VB in the best way after spending as many as nine seasons with the French team.
