TRENTINO take two sets from rematch with Fenerbahce to secure their sixth appearance in a European final
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Istanbul, Turkey, April 1, 2017. TRENTINO Diatec needed to take two sets from their rematch with Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL to make it to the ‘grand finale’ of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men and the Italian standout team achieved this goal to get the right to play France’s TOURS VB for Europe’s second most coveted crown. TRENTINO Diatec will be making their sixth appearance in a European final – they previously won the CEV Volleyball Champions League in 2009, 2010 and 2011, lost the CEV Cup final to Dinamo MOSCOW in 2015 and the last act of the 2016 CEV Volleyball Champions League to Zenit KAZAN. The final matches will be taking place on April 11 and 15, with TRENTINO hosting the first round at home.
The first set was a very close race up until the second technical time-out before Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL broke away towards the end to secure a 25-20 win. The second set was not any different but this time around, TRENTINO Diatec emerged victorious (25-22) to level the match. The Italians rallied to an early 8-5 lead in set three but Fenerbahce responded flipping the charts around at the second technical time-out (16-14) before taking a dramatic 29-27 win to stay alive in the match. However, TRENTINO Diatec were back on track in set four where they set the pace from start to end (8-4, 16-13, 25-19) and at this stage the Italians had secured their ticket to the finals. The tiebreak did not have any real significance anymore and even though Fenerbahce cruised to a 15-6 win to seal a 3-2 home victory, the Turks have to bid farewell to the competition.
